In the John E. Hillert Auditorium
at the Historic Masonic Theatre
**All Films are Free**

NOW IS YOUR CHANCE:
For years we've been trying to get the rights to screen the film that film that launched a franchise. This summer, Disney (who now owns the Star Wars franchise) unlocked the public screening rights for 6 weeks only. At the end of August, the screening rights go back into a Disney vault.

JOIN US TO RELIVE THE BIG SCREEN MAGIC.

You remember:
Swinging sticks in the backyard (or living room) and making weird buzzing sounds. If you had a brother or sister, the duel was on!
Heavy breathing? Uh-oh, the original 'dark lord' was near.
And a rolling fire hydrant shaped droid became an instant fan favorite.
You know you dressed for Halloween as one of the characters in this film. Probably even won a costume contest or two, as well.

THE FILM THAT LAUNCHED THE KESSEL RUN CONTROVERSY:

Han Solo: You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon!?
Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi: Should I have?
Han Solo: Its the ship that made The Kessel Run in less then 12 parsecs!

Join us for this film event.

The Imperial Forces -- under orders from cruel Darth Vader (David Prowse) -- hold Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) hostage, in their efforts to quell the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford), captain of the Millennium Falcon, work together with the companionable droid duo R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) to rescue the beautiful princess, help the Rebel Alliance, and restore freedom and justice to the Galaxy.

Beauty and The Beast (G)

**All Films are Free**

Beauty and the Beast is funny and lively and preposterous. The original animated version recalls the music, voices and whimsy that can only be found in the world of Disney.

Beast is just fun! Unlike a lot of Disney princes of that time, he is super flawed. He’s a brat with anger issues who is stuck in the form of a wolf-buffalo man. What is not entertaining about all that?

Gaston is one of Disney’s greatest villains since he thinks he’s the hero. He’s a classic misogynist who thinks monsters are just creatures rather than realizing real monsters are in the hearts of men like him.

The Disney film has inspired many adaptations such as musicals, live-action remakes, video games, and even comic books. We are pleased to present this animated classic on our big screen.

So....
BE OUR GUEST!
(you knew it was coming).

An arrogant young prince (Robby Benson) and his castle's servants fall under the spell of a wicked enchantress, who turns him into the hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return. The spirited, headstrong village girl Belle (Paige O'Hara) enters the Beast's castle after he imprisons her father Maurice (Rex Everhart). With the help of his enchanted servants, including the matronly Mrs. Potts (Angela Lansbury), Belle begins to draw the cold-hearted Beast out of his isolation.

This Disney classic is rarely shown on big screens. Make time to bring the family to revisit your favorite characters up close.

The Grimm fairy tale gets a Technicolor treatment in Disney's first animated feature. Jealous of Snow White's beauty, the wicked queen orders the murder of her innocent stepdaughter, but later discovers that Snow White is still alive and hiding in a cottage with seven friendly little miners. Disguising herself as a hag, the queen brings a poisoned apple to Snow White, who falls into a death-like

The Masonic was known for showing westerns on its movie screens back in the day. We continue that tradition this fall featuring one of the greatest western stars of all-time playing one of literature's most fascinating characters.

John Wayne’s might seem a little antiquated these days, but his substantial portfolio nevertheless persists as the stuff of legend. Wayne was credited in at least 177 movies over the course of his career. That’s not to mention his oft-overlooked (and frequently uncredited) credits as a producer and director. Suffice to say, the man kept a formidable work ethic from one decade to the next that resulted in not just some of Hollywood’s most classic Westerns, but some of its best films, period.

After hired hand Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey) murders the father of 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Kim Darby), she seeks vengeance and hires U.S. Marshal "Rooster" Cogburn (John Wayne), a man of "true grit," to track Chaney into Indian territory. As the two begin their pursuit, a Texas Ranger, La Boeuf (Glen Campbell), joins the manhunt in hopes of capturing Chaney for the murder of a Texas senator and collecting a substantial reward. The three clash on their quest of bringing to justice the same man.

What's Your Story? Potluck

What's Your Story? Potluck

Friday, September 13th, 2019 – 6:00 pm - Friday, September 13th, 2019 – 8:00 pm

Historic Masonic Theatre and Masonic Amphitheatre
510 Main Street
Clifton Forge, VA  24422 Google Map

On Friday, September 13, 2019, the What’s Your Story? project will host a potluck dinner and story sharing session in the Thomas P. Dean/Racey and Dean Underground at the Historic Masonic Theatre.

Dinner will begin at 6 pm, with storytelling getting underway at 6:45 and lasting until 8 pm.

“Stories shared build connection and community,” says WYS? project director Joan Vannorsdall. “What’s Your Story? events and books connect Alleghany Highlands residents through story, building relationship. Everybody loves a good story—and sharing it over good food makes it even better.”

The committee hopes to make the storytelling dinners quarterly events at the Theatre, with a suggested theme for each gathering. The September topic is “Back to School.”

“We’re hoping to enjoy stories from all ages, all walks of life. Who doesn’t remember feeling of walking into your classroom on the first day of school? Or the joy of the final bell on the last day? We hope teachers and students and administrators and parents—everyone—will come share a story,” Vannorsdall says. “If you’d rather tell a story from another part of your life, tell it. We’ll listen.”

The WYS? project has completed four books to date, focusing on the Historic Masonic Theatre, The C&O Railroad and Hospital, Green Pastures, and Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. The books are available at the Historic Masonic Theatre, the Clifton Forge Antique Mall, Livy’s Closet, and the Chamber of Commerce. The books will be sold at each storytelling event.

The event is free of charge; participants are asked to bring a covered dish and a good story.

STARS Fall Harvest Jamboree

Historic Masonic Theatre and Masonic Amphitheatre

Clifton Forge, VA  24422 Google Map

[Please note the change of date from Sept 7 to Sept 15]
STARS (Special Theatrical Artists Revue & Showcase), a troupe of 30 performers who have physical disabilities and/or intellectual challenges, will perform the "Fall Harvest Jamboree," a variety show, at The Historic Masonic Theatre, on Sunday, September 15, at 3:00 p.m.

The "Fall Harvest Jamboree" will be the second variety show of STAR's, 23rd performance season. STARS was founded as an outreach program of Appalfolks of America Association (AAA), a non-profit organization based in Clifton Forge that has promoted the literary and performing arts since 1985.

Paula Crance and Sonya K. Romanello are sharing the role as director of STARS, and Chris Fisher will return to the stage as emcee. Crance is a member of AAA's board of directors who has volunteered as director of STARS for several seasons.

M. Ray Allen, founder of AAA, remarked, "STARS continues to be one of our most meaningful outreach programs, and the troupe has performed uplifting shows that have helped AAA develop a faithful audience base."

The 2006 documentary film shot in The Historic Masonic Theatre and in the Town of Clifton Forge titled "STARS" won a Bronze Telly for excellence, and the film can be viewed by requesting it at the Clifton Forge Public Library. The film features members of the STARS' troupe, some of the parents of the performers, the town manager at the time, and AAA's staff members reflecting on the value of the outreach program.

STARS has been designated by The Historic Masonic Theatre as a Home Program along with AAA's Junior Virginia Opry, and both outreach programs are scheduled to perform a minimum of two shows per years in The Historic Masonic Theatre.

Allen concluded, "I wish to thank the following for financial support of STARS: The Town of Clifton Forge, WestRock, The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, and Powerhouse Gaming."

Did you know:
The producers tried to give Daniel Radcliffe green eyes and Hermione buck teeth like in the books, but failed. Sadly, Daniel had a terrible allergic reaction to his green contact lenses and had to stop wearing them, while Emma Watson couldn't speak clearly wearing her false buck teeth.

We'll kick off our celebration of the boy wizard with the cinematic adaptation of the first of J.K. Rowling's popular children's novels about Harry Potter, a boy who learns on his eleventh birthday that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and possesses unique magical powers of his own. He is summoned from his life as an unwanted child to become a student at Hogwarts, an English boarding school for wizards. There, he meets several friends who become his closest allies and help him discover the truth about his parents' mysterious deaths.
